Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Pre Menstrual Syndrome

Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) is characterized by distressing psychological, physical, and behavioral symptoms occurring during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. It is a combination of emotional, physical, and psychological disturbances typically after ovulation and before menstruation.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Pre Menstrual Syndrome

PMS can be correlated with the vitiation of Pitta and Vata doshas during the Rituvyatita Kalaja (transitional phase between seasons). Dosha imbalance is exacerbated by incorrect dietary and lifestyle practices.

Causes and Common Symptoms

  • Oestrogen and progesterone level variations
  • CNS neurotransmitter fluctuations (noradrenaline, GABA, serotonin)
  • Altered electrolyte and fluid balance
  • Common symptoms include irritability, tension, depression, mood swings, bloating, and weight gain.

Investigations and Diagnosis

Rule out any organic lesions through appropriate diagnostic measures.
